Well, I still have seven weeks to go, before I get a week break and then I have eight weeks of summer session,.....so when folks started to suggest the year was ending...... it made me tired. Gotta love the quarter system.
Ouch! Sorry, Sharon, that was rather insensitive on my part. I've never taught or been a student at a place with a quarter system, and I tend to forget such a thing exists.
It's fascinating - reading about quarter systems, and I guess the effect of a different hemisphere...We're just past mid-semester (about eight weeks still to go - because we start interviewing prospective students after the current ones leave/change classes - whatever. I think this is the very worst time of year for me: we are desperately working out which Learning Outcomes we still have to cover; students are panicking that they won't complete; staff have to become careers advisors overnight; it's getting freezing cold at night; leaves are falling - quickly and ingloriously this year...everyone just seems tired, cold and irritable. Maybe that's just me - I'm sure it's because a part of my body clock is firmly fixed on northern time: I feel we should be watching trees blossom, skies grow bluer and days grow longer.
But this is Australia - and I'm currently getting up in the dark and getting home in the dark - and I hate it! We get two weeks off in July - in between semesters - and then I'm off to the lakes to get a glimpse of some water!
At Community College English, we invite faculty from all higher education institutions to discuss the theory and practice of teaching writing and literature at the two-year college. Topics may include--but are by no means limited to--classroom pedagogy, current trends, technology, and workplace/workload issues. All voices are welcome.
