Blogcabulary

For a workshop that I'll be conducting in a few weeks, I'd like to compile a list of blog terminology--with words like post, trackback, blog, moblog, ping, blogroll, and so forth. Are there any other words out there that need to be included?

Thanks.

Several people have asked me what a wiki is lately. That might be something to toss in...the difference in a blog and a wiki.

How about meme, comment spam, troll?

I'll add more if I think of them. Cool! A blogging dictionary.

Thanks, Sharon and CLC. What's a troll, though?

I absolutely hate the word "meme" for its definitional vagueness, especially since it's been vague-ized from the language of linguistics, which is typically so careful (phoneme, grapheme, et cetera, so amateur linguists put an "m" in front of it and decided that it'd refer to a unit of meaning), and wish it -- and its accompanying sloppy usage by the Wired magazine crew and their readers - would just die. Re "Troll": this definition might prove useful.

When I was active on The WELL, "meme" had a more definite meaning. It referred to some notion that was propagated throughout the threaded discussions. It was not just a single meaning, but one that showed broad currency in on-line postings. That's probably where the editors of Wired got the term, since they used a lot of writers from The WELL in their early days.

I don't like meme, either, but there's no question it's a part of the blog vocabulary. I wasn't endorsing it, by any means!

I think you're hitting the major terms here, Joanna. I don't know how much "hands on" technology access you'll have in your workshop, but beyond showing folks how to sign up for a blogger blog in the first place, I think it might be worthwhile to spend some time showing folks how to do links on their blogs, places where they can and can't mess with the templates, etc. And you can show them the difference between the "free and easy" services like blogger and the not free services (like typepad) or the not so easy services (like MT).

Of course, the other question is what you'd use a blog for in your teaching in the first place. This is on my mind this morning because of an article I'm in the process of writing, but I'm beginning to think that blogging is a great writerly activity, but it isn't necessarily a great teacherly activity.
